16 States with Tax Free Days This Summer

I first started writing about tax free days aka sales tax holidays a decade ago. That was when my own daughters were still in school and we needed to find ways to save on back to school shopping. Turns out the summer months are when most states let you shop tax free for back to school, including these 16 places in the United States where you can shop at least one day this summer without paying sales tax.

Alabama Tax Free Days

The Alabama Tax Free Weekend starts on the third Friday of July and ends that following Sunday. So, for 2024, the date is July 19 through July 21. The following items are exempt from Alabama state sales tax: books (up to $20); clothing (up to $100); computers (up to $750); school supplies (up to $50)

Arkansas Tax Free Days

The tax free weekend Arkansas in 2024 is August 3-4, 2024. That’s just two days for this sales tax holiday–Saturday and Sunday. This year Arkansas outlined six categories that would qualify to be exempt from state sales tax: clothing and footwear; clothing accessories and equipment; electronic devices; school supplies; school art supplies; school instructional materials.

Connecticut Tax Free Week

In the state of Connecticut, there are seven tax free days, adding up to an entire week of tax-free shopping. It is always the third week in August. For the 2024 Sales Tax Free Week, it is Sunday, August 18 through Saturday, 24, 2024. It covers clothing or footwear costing $100 or less.

Florida Tax Free Shopping Days

Florida offers multiple tax free days throughout the year. However, the sales tax holiday targeting back to school shopping is July 29-August 11, 2024. That’s two-weeks long and a great time to hit the many Florida shopping outlets.

Iowa Tax Free Days

This yearly Iowa shopping holiday is held the first Friday and Saturday of August. So, in 2024 those dates are August 2 and August 3, 2024. Again, it is Friday and Saturday only. It does not include Sunday. It covers “any article of wearing apparel and typical footwear intended to be worn on or about the human body.”

Maryland Tax Free Week

Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week is Maryland’s sales tax holiday tied into back-to-school shopping. It starts the second Sunday in August and goes through the following Saturday. Therefore, for 2024, it is August 11-17. It covers clothing, footwear and accessories priced $100 or less.

Massachusetts Tax Free Days

For 2024, the tax free shopping days in Massachusetts are August 10 and August 11, 2024. The Massachusetts sales tax holiday is different from any other state with a tax holiday, because pretty much everything you buy during the tax free weekend is exempt from sales tax. It includes items costing under $2,500 (with a few exceptions) along with all of the back to school items you would expect to save money on during tax free shopping days.

Mississippi Sales Tax Free Days

For 2024, the date for the Mississippi back to school sales tax holiday is July 26, 2024 through July 27, 2024. During that time you do not have to pay sales tax on any article of clothing, footwear or school supplies that costs less than $100. That’s a single item priced under $100–not your total purchase.

Missouri Back to School Tax Free Days

According to Missouri state law, the Missouri back to school sales tax holiday begins on the first Friday in August and continues through the following Sunday. So, in 2024, you can shop tax free in Missouri Friday, August 2 through Sunday, August 4. It covers clothing, school supplies, computer software, personal computers, graphing calculators and computer peripheral devices.

New Mexico Tax Free Days

The tax free days here are called the New Mexico Gross Receipts Tax Holiday. It is always the first full weekend in August, on the first Friday through the first Sunday. So, this year it is August 2-4, 2024. Like so many others, it covers basic clothing and school supplies.

Ohio Tax Free Days

Ohio has made a big change in 2024 for its tax free shopping days. Previously, it was alway over a long week. However, starting this year, tax free shopping goes for 10 days—Tuesday, July 30, 2024 until Thursday, August 8, 2024.

Oklahoma Tax Free Days

Unlike other state sales tax holidays, Oklahoma does not include school supplies and the like in its tax free shopping days. It’s just clothing and footwear priced under $100. The Oklahoma sales tax holiday is always the first Friday through the first Sunday in August—so August 2-4, 2024.

South Carolina Tax Free Days

South Carolina calls its tax free shopping days the annual 72-hour Sales Tax Holiday. During this time certain items are exempt from the state’s 6 percent sales tax. For 2024, the tax-free weekend is August 2-4, 2024. Tax-free items range from clothing, accessories, and shoes to school supplies, backpacks, and computers.

Tennessee Tax Free Days

You can shop tax free in Tennessee for back to school on Friday, July 26, 2024 through Sunday, July 28, 2024. That’s over a three-day weekend of Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There are three major categories that the Tennessee sales tax holiday covers: clothing, school supplies and computers.

Texas Tax Free Days

The Texas tax free shopping days this year are August 9-11, 2024. That’s when you can buy most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks (sold for less than $100) tax free from a Texas store or from an online or catalog seller doing business in Texas. This includes Amazon.

West Virginia Tax Free Days

For 2024, the West Virginia Sales Tax Holiday is August 2-5, 2024. There are five categories of items that you can buy sales tax free. They are: clothing priced at $125 or less; school supplies priced $50 or less; school instruction material priced $20 or less; laptop and tablet computers, not purchased for use in a trade or business, priced at $500 or less; and sports equipment, not purchased for use in a trade or business, priced at $150 or less.

Six States Where Clothing is Always Tax Free

Below is a list of states that always have tax free shopping on clothing. That’s because sales tax never applies. They are: Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Six States Without Sales Tax

There are currently just a handful of states without any sales tax at all. This is good to know if you’re looking to shop and save money by shopping tax free in these American states. As of this writing, those states are Alaska (AK), Delaware (DE), Hawaii (HI), Montana (MT), New Hampshire (NH) and Oregon (OR).
