Organic Food at Costco

It’s so easy to buy organic food at Costco. And, frankly, it’s more affordable than other stores selling organic products. It’s one of the reasons that I renew my Costco membership year after year, even after we moved a few years ago and had to drive 40 minutes to the nearest Costco. Now that there’s a Costco in Maine, my drive is much shorter.

You might think that Whole Foods is the largest seller of organic food in the United States. You would be wrong. According to multiple sources, for the past decade, Costco has consistently been the largest retailer of organic food.

Costco continues to grow its organic offerings year after year. Unlike traditional supermarkets, Costco does not isolate organic foods in a separate section. Instead, you’ll find these organic products side-by-side with traditional versions. Take organic peanut butter. You’ll find that version on the shelf next to Jif or Skippy peanut butters. Organic milk or organic yogurt is in the same refrigerated case with non-organic versions.

Costco offers an extensive variety of organic products. Here are some of the categories where you can find organic food plus some of my personal recommendations.

Fresh produce

Just like in the supermarket, you can buy regular bananas at Costco and also organic bananas. That’s hardly your only organic choice. Costco often stocks local produce, such as the organic wild Maine blueberries we could find in our Costco in Maine. We’ve also purchased organic apples, berries, avocados and spinach.

Beverages

The Kirkland Signature coffee and k-cups, that Keurig makes for the Costco brand, are organic as are some of the ground and whole bean coffees. Other organic beverages include almond milk, lemonade and coconut milk.

Dairy

Some of the dairy products that you can buy as organics include milk, cheese and yogurt. In fact, the non-fat, plain Greek yogurt we buy at Costco and love to use in place of sour cream is organic.

Packaged and pantry goods plus condiments

The bottle of honey we have in our cabinet is organic honey from Kirkland Signature, the Costco store brand. We also buy Kirkland Signature organic strawberry preserves. Other organic preserves include from Stonewall Kitchen, a Maine institution based in York. Nature’s Path Organic granola is sold under the Kirkland Signature name. Other organics range from chicken broth to maple syrup to peanut butter.

Breads and bakery items

Our daughter introduced us to Dave’s Killer Bread, which is made with organic ingredients. We can buy a two-pack of 24-ounce loaves at Costco for about the same price as a smaller, single loaf at the local grocery store. Baked goods that are gluten free are often organic here, too.

Frozen foods

In the frozen cases or freezer aisles of Costco, you’ll find all kinds of organic options. This includes frozen fruit, which we like to use in smoothies, as well as frozen veggies like the broccoli florets we make in the air fryer. There are also specialty frozen items, like organic rainbow carrots as well as organic riced cauliflower aka cauliflower rice.

Leading Organic Brands Available

I’ve already mentioned a few of the organic brands you can buy at Costco, such as Stonewall Kitchen, Dave’s Killer Bread and Nature’s Path Organic. Those are hardly the only ones. Here are a few more:

  • Horizon Organic (dairy)
  • Amy’s Kitchen (prepared foods)
  • Annie’s (snacks and mac and cheese)
  • Newman’s Own (coffee and more)

As mentioned earlier, Costco’s private label is called Kirkland Signature and has a wide range of organic options as well. Store brands tend to have better prices than name brands overall. Some of the Kirkland Signature organics include:

  • applesauce
  • cane sugar
  • olive oil
  • quinoa
  • tomato sauce
  • tomato paste
  • vanilla beans

Costco Versus Other Wholesale Clubs for Organic Choices

Costco is known for an extensive range of organic products, including many exclusive store brand items. When comparing Costco to other wholesale clubs, you’ll quickly notice the differences. For instance, when put next to Sam’s Club and BJ’s, Costco typically features a wider range of organic options.

BJ’s offers some organic choices under its store brand Wellsley Farms but with fewer options. Sam’s Club carries some organics, including under its store brand Members Mark but the selection isn’t as expansive and tends to be less prominent in-store. However, you can find some of the same organic brands as you would at Costco, such as Dave’s Killer Bread and Horizon Organic Milk.

If a large variety of USDA-certified organic items is important to you, Costco generally leads among wholesale clubs. Whether you want bulk packs of organic eggs or diverse snack options, you’ll find more consistency at Costco than at its main competitors.

Additional Savings Tips for Shopping Organic at Wholesale Clubs

Use the warehouse club’s own app or weekly ads to find new organic inventory and special deals. One of the best ways to save money on organic groceries is to use coupons. Of the three wholesale clubs, only BJ’s accepts coupons. Use them when you can. When shopping at Costco, pay close attention to the yellow highlight on the price sign if it’s a markdown or there is an instant savings on something, usually a manufacturer’s discount.

Costco Membership Deal via Groupon

The best deal on a Costco Membership right now is through Groupon. When you sign up, you’ll get your one-year membership plus a $50 Costco Digital Shop Card for free. In case you didn’t know, the Costco Shop Card is the store’s gift card. You can use it in store or online.

This offer is for new Costco memberships only or for former Costco members whose membership expired more than 18 months ago. So, if you’ve moved, there wasn’t a Costco nearby and you let your membership lapse for more than 18 months, you’re good to go to sign up for this deal again!

Also, you can avoid the lines at your Costco location by signing up for this Groupon Costco deal. This was the crowd at the new Costco in Maine near where I live. Yikes!

Other warehouse club memberships

Perhaps you prefer to shop at another warehouse club because it is more convenient to where you live than Costco is. Good news: Both BJs and Sam’s Club have Groupon deals right now for memberships. Plus, both tend to have gas stations where members can get a cheaper price when filling up the gas tank.
