Retail Stores Closed on Holidays
While we know that many corporate businesses close for national holidays, did you know that certain retail stores are closed on holidays, too? You have to commend these retailers for giving their employees the day off when many other Americans have vacation, too.
However, if you’re looking to go shopping, this may not be good news. Perhaps you want to do in-person shopping on certain holidays. So having retail stores closed is no good for you. You do realize that even when physical, brick-and-mortar locations are closed, you can always shop online, right? I mean, this is true in most instances.

There are a handful of retailers that are reliably closed on certain national holidays. This is just like government offices and banks that also close on national holidays. There are other retailers that close for just some holidays, such as Thanksgiving, Memorial Day or July 4th.
For example, Costco locations in the United States are closed on most major holidays.
Those holidays are:
- New Year’s Day
- Easter Sunday
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
If you’ve ever visited a Costco location and paid attention to the front door or the entrance, you’ll notice they post this sign on every store. Also, they have it listed on the Costco website.
List of store closures by holiday
It’s possible you may be visiting this article at different times of year. Therefore, I’ve broken out which retail stores are closed on holidays by holiday. I’ve listed them in chronological order by when they happen throughout the year. Finally, when I first started writing about stores closed on holidays, it was limited to the news of stores staying closed on Thanksgiving. However, this topic has expanded over the years. Find out how federal holidays affect store closures.

Final thoughts on retail stores closed on national holidays
Keep in mind that this information is based on behavior from the previous year. Of course, if any of this information changes, I’ll update this post.
Maybe you’ll want to reward these stores mentioned here with your business. You know, give them your business by doing some of your shopping when they open again after a holiday is over. Because I think retailers like this should be commended for doing the right thing and closing on a national holiday.
Here is a list of tax-free shopping holidays throughout the United States.
