If you like to own a big dog but you’ve got allergies, you may think you’re out of luck. However, you would be wrong. Here are 12 large dog breeds that are also considered to be hypoallergenic. No need to pass the tissues.

The Xoloitzcuintli dog breed is also known as the Mexican hairless dog. How do you pronounce this dog breed? According to the AKC, it is “show-low-eats-QUEENT-lee.” From what I understand, owners refer to the breed by its nickname–Xolo or “show low.” A standard size Xolo weighs about 50 pounds.

Afghan Hound

Afghan hounds can weigh up to 75 pounds. And, despite the Afghan hound’s long, silky locks, this breed is, in fact, hypoallergenic. That’s because though they shed, they shed very little.

Portuguese Water Dog

Some people say that the Portuguese water dog is on the cusp of being a large breed, with males weighing as much as 60 pounds. As far as the hypoallergenic part goes, just ask the Obamas. They had two Portuguese water dogs because their daughters are allergic to dogs.

Standard Poodle

One of the most popular hypoallergenic breeds for people with allergies is the poodle. Now, when it comes to finding a big dog, you’ll want to adopt a standard poodle. They can weigh up to 65 pounds. Also, poodles are on this list of the friendliest dog breeds.

Airedale

Technically, the Airedale is the Airedale Terrier Dog. Of all the terrier breeds, the Airedale is the largest. They can weigh as much as 65 pounds. And they shed very little, though they do tend to drool.

Irish Water Spaniel

Female Irish water spaniels can weigh close to 60 pounds and males close to 65 pounds. As far as their hypoallergenic status, it’s because they don’t shed. Also, you might say that they’re waterproof, too —water just rolls off of its coat.

Barbet

The Barbet is known as the French water dog. Like other dogs with water in their name, their coat is meant to repel water and they shed very little, if at all. They are on the smaller side of large hypoallergenic dogs, though males can weigh up to 60 pounds.

Giant Schnauzer

The word giant in the name of the Giant schnauzer is not hyperbole. A full-grown female can weigh as much as 75 pounds and a full grown male has the potential to be over 100 pounds. Like the standard and miniature version of this dog, the schnauzer sheds very little.

The Briard is a French herding dog. It’s also the quintessential shaggy dog, with hair covering its eye. It looks like it stepped right out of a Disney film. And it is because it has hair and not fur that it qualifies as a large hypoallergenic dog breed. Finally, males can weigh as much as 100 pounds.

The Komondor is a big dog that looks like it is covered in dreadlocks. In fact, because those dreads are hair, you don’t have to worry about shedding. This breed hails from Hungary and can weigh 100 pounds or more.

The wirehaired pointing griffon is your basic retrieving dog for hunting. However, unlike Labrador, Golden or other retriever varieties, this breed has wiry hair that does not shed like other dogs. It’s on the smaller side of large, hypoallergenic dogs, with males weighing, at most, 70 pounds.
